What is SCORM?

SCORM, which stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model, ย is a set of technical standards for eLearning software products. It is the de facto industry standard for eLearning. Specifically, SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate with each other.

What does a SCORM file look like?

Online courses can be created in a variety of third party eLearning Authoring Tools. These tools can export and package the course files into a SCORM package. The package file usually looks like a ZIP file "file_name".zip

When and why do I need to use the SCORM standard?

  • If you buy a course from a course provider that has already created courses in the SCORM standard.

  • If you have a number of SCORM courses that need to be migrated to Learnster from other Learning Platforms.

  • If you are using another eLearning authoring tool to create your courses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages with the SCORM standard?

Advantages

  • It is easy to install courses in multiple compatible learning platforms.

  • You can use third party elearning authoring tools to design and import your courses.

Disadvantages

  • Administrator & Instructor cannot see course progress between course start and end.

How do I import a SCORM file into Learnster?

You can easily upload a SCORM file into Learnster by using the following steps:

  1. From the Course Builder menu drag and drop the "SCORM" icon .

  2. Upload your SCORM file (*.zip). Depending the file size uploading a SCORM file will take a few minutes.ย 

  3. You can edit the eLearning settings by clicking on the "Edit content" menu. Read more in the next section.ย

  • Edit E-learning title

    • Add e-learning title

    • Add description for this e-learning

  • Duration

  • Display SCORM content

    • New tab

    • Embedded

    • Pop-up

  • SCORM progress

    • Clear Learner Progress (clears progress for learners that has started the SCORM but not finished it. Learners that has completed the SCORM activity will still be marked as complete in Learnster).

Updating a course with a new SCORM version

To update a scorm package with a new version just select "Edit content" and click on "Upload new file".

How is the SCORM course displayed on Learnster?

Usually and by default a new tab will be opened in your web browser (highly recommended). Please check the section "eLearning settings" above for more options.

Which SCORM version is supported by Learnster?

We support SCORM 1.2.
